Macadam surfaces are used for a variety of sports including tennis, netball and basketball. Usually porous, they can be colour coated to ensure a good slip resistance is achieved.

As macadam surfaces are usually porous, attention needs to be paid to the migration of dirt and debris in to the pores. If this happens, the speed at which water percolates through will reduce and could lead to a flooded and unusable surface.

Regular maintenance should include the removal of litter and general debris. The surfaces also require regular chemical treatment, ideally twice a year, in the spring and autumn.

In addition, the surfaces should be power washed once a year to remove general dirt and detritus. In order to keep a good slip resistant surface, it should be re-coloured approximately every five years, depending upon usage.
